House in a Box

Imagine living in a 200-square-foot space. Now imagine that the space is an old shipping container. Sound less than homey? Check out Sunset magazine’s idea house project that takes repurposing to a whole new level.

For this year’s open house at their annual Celebration Weekend, Sunset teamed up with HyBrid Architecture from Seattle to make what they call the Sunset Cargotecture house–a home created from a shipping container. This unique (and stylish) dwelling gives a whole new meaning to decorating small spaces. The tiny backyard getaway offers sleeping space for three, a modest bathroom, kitchen space, wrap-around patio, chicken coop and garden, all built for under $60,000.

The home features convertible beds, Ikea kitchen cabinetry, and a full bathroom enclosed in the size of a walk-in shower. The interior and exterior of the home use many earth-friendly aspects, including bamboo flooring, recycled plastic insulation and drought-tolerant plants in the garden.
