Unless you’ve completely given up using grocery store plastic bags, you probably have a drawer in your kitchen (like mine) stuffed with plastic bags that you use from everything to packing lunches to lining small trash cans. Since you recycle plastic bags anyway, why not make their hiding spot a little more attractive and accessible?
A homemade plastic bag holder can match your kitchen decor perfectly when you make it from a dish towel that matches your existing set. Martha Stewart has directions for one that hangs from a hook in the pantry, and you can pull out bags as you need them from the bottom, sort of like an upside-down tissue dispenser.
There are directions for this type of project all over the Internet, and it’s quite easy to put together even without a pattern. Roll the towel into a tube, pin it and sew up the edge seam, then sew a piece of elastic in the bottom hem and attach a hanger to the top hem. You can sew this by hand or with a sewing machine, and either way will probably take no more than 20 minutes.
For Earth Day, why not turn over a new leaf with the way you reuse plastic bags. Build an easy dispenser and hang it in the kitchen. When the bags are right at your fingertips, you’ll likely find even more ways to use them!
